The Captain's Quarters Bed and Breakfast Inn was built c 1902. Originally a duplex, it housed two captains and their families. Captain's Quarters is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located with the post's original parade ground at its front door, and Chickamauga Chattanooga National Battlefield at its back. Built after the costliest battle of the Civil War - the Battle of Chickamauga and Chattanooga - Fort Oglethorpe was home to the 6th Cavalry and was considered an elite Cavalry post. From here men moved west to serve settlers as a mobile police force. The post was also known throughout the region for its polo matches and fox hunts (and charming young officers). Now the glory days are gone, but the Captain's Quarters lives on.
Following completion of his studies at West Point, Dwight D. Eisenhower was stationed at Fort Oglethorpe before receiving his tank command in World War I. At this same time, Fort Oglethorpe was also one of four designated German military internment camps. The WACs were stationed here during World War II.
In 1946 the military installation was sold by the government to a local group of civilians as a ready made town. Today, one of the original Cavalry post buildings on Barnhardt Circle is Captain's Quarters Bed and Breakfast Inn. It was restored and converted to a Bed and Breakfast Inn in 1988. Once a duplex, the two sides have been opened up to create one large inn. It is a frame structure built in the Classic Renaissance Revival style. This beautifully renovated home has two suites and six additional guest rooms with private baths. Four of the guest rooms also feature original fireplaces and mantels. A lovely parlor and comfortable library, perfect for relaxing and meeting new friends, have been furnished with elegant period antiques, family pieces and collectibles appropriate to the captains' family atmosphere. Adding a special touch are Asian artifacts and textiles collected during the innkeepers' time spent abroad.

Meet The Innkeepers
Although Jim and Julie Powell are native Tennesseans, Jim's career as a hotel architect has led them far afield. After graduating college they lived in Germany where Jim served as an officer in the US Army Corps of Engineers. Upon returning to the States, Jim and Julie raised four daughters while Jim worked as a hotel architect/project manager throughout the southeastern and northeastern U.S.
Later Jim and Julie traveled to Asia and enjoyed seven years living and traveling in Indonesia and Thailand, as well as spending time traveling in Europe. While Jim pursued his career, Julie used the opportunity to study and collect southeast Asian textiles, many of which are displayed at Captain's Quarters. Wherever they have lived, Jim and Julie have enjoyed entertaining, and their home has always been a gathering place for family and friends.
After their time abroad, Jim and Julie have now returned to the South, and are enjoying their new careers as innkeepers. Jim's experience in the hospitality industry and Julie's skills in cooking and entertaining combine to create a warm and welcoming experience for you at Captain's Quarters Bed and Breakfast Inn. |
